My Time with Jason Reynolds

Tuesday, March 17, 2026: Ms. Karstädt’s 12th-grade English class took a special field trip to the Literaturhaus Hamburg. The purpose of the trip was to meet the well-known American author Jason Reynolds in person and learn more about his life, his work, and his motivation for writing novels for young adults. It was clear from the start that this would not be an ordinary visit.
Jason Reynolds, who also served as a co-producer on a Spider Man movie, impressed the students with his open and authentic manner. It was particularly interesting to learn that he was inspired by rap music as a child, which continues to shape his writing style to this day.
However, his talk was not only about his books, but also about the lessons he has learned in life. He
emphasized how important it is to finish what you start — even when you don’t feel like it
or when things get out of hand. That’s something he wants to teach his young readers:
to stay disciplined.
The students described the experience as very impressive. Many said that his profound and
meaningful statements encouraged them to ask more and more questions. This created a
relaxed and almost personal atmosphere. With his easygoing and friendly
manner Jason Reynolds came across as very genuine and honest. He spoke openly about a wide range of topics and took the time to provide detailed answers. He often responded in a humorous and entertaining way, which captivated the audience and sparked their interest. For many students, the highlight of the trip was the passion with which he spoke about his books and life. It was clear that he truly loved his work, and his enthusiasm was infectious. His passion made the visit an unforgettable experience.
Overall, the trip to the Literaturhaus was not only an exciting opportunity to meet a
successful author, but also a valuable experience that inspired the students to
reflect on their own goals and the importance of discipline in everyday life.
